Decision Making Questions

Good questions on decision making lead to better and systematic choices. Improve the quality of your decisions. It will lead to a better YOU.

Decision making has always been a part of your everyday life. Almost everything you do involves deciding what works best for you. Making decisions can be very simple and can be very challenging depending on the situation you are in. There are many approaches to decision making. In the end, every decision you make plays an important role on the course of your life.

Make a list of major decisions or choices you must make in the next month. Put some effort into this so your list includes both decisions being forced by others and proactive decisions you are choosing to make. Prioritize the items on your list. Pick one and use the Decision Making Questions below to come up with the most effective decision.

  1. What is my problem or choice I want to focus on?
  2. What are the facts about it? (This gets your mind familiar with the whole picture. It also helps you separate the facts from the emotions or perceptions you add to the facts. )
  3. Why have I not yet made my choice yet? What am I afraid?
  4. What are the criteria I would use to know that I made the right choice? (For example, the right choice may have to be fun, easy, cost little, help others, feel right, fits into my purpose, etc.)
  5. Who may be impacted by my decisions?
  6. What resources would be involved?
  7. What are different options, solutions and choices to be made? (Get creative and streeeeeeeetch your thinking. Ask, "What additional options can be considered?" Include a few far-out ideas to expand your thinking.)
  8. What rating on a scale of 1(lo rating) - 10 (hi rating) does each option receive according to my criteria? (An important one is your gut feeling.) Does this option feel right? Then add the numbers and see which give the highest totals.
  9. Again ask yourself "Does this choice feel right? Does it feel expansive and inspiring or restrictive?"
  10. What action steps am I going to take?

We are called upon many times a day to make decisions. Some can be done quickly. Watch that you are not going against your own conscience and that you are not selling your soul as you do it to please others. Once you make a decision, anchor it deeply by writing it down and creating a plan for implementation.
