“As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world — that is the myth of the atomic age — as in being able to remake ourselves.”

We are often asked, “What is your favourite book? What book best overviews your philosophy of life?” For me (John) that book is ‘The Living Qabalah’ by Will Parfitt.
In my view, the Qabalah – the tree of life – presents one of the most complete models of life, growth and change. Based on Jewish tradition it describes how we grow through life, through relationships, through crisis. It takes into account if we are more mentally or emotionally biased. It defines how to change, grow and create in small progressive steps.
This book is about consciousness and our experience of the play of the energies as they move both upwards and downwards.
We experience the energies rising as we become increasingly aware and as we aspire to higher guidance. On this upward journey through the tree of life, we move out of our materialism, emotional reactions and limited unconscious thinking into a more loving, impersonal, spiritual state. This journey explains how we progressively experience new depth, peace, truth and beauty in life.
At the same time, energies shift downward through the tree of life when the more conceptual, creative, abstract, qualitative energies of creation are grounded into denser energies of thought, feelings and behaviours and finally into form. The journey downwards addresses how we create and attract what we want and need in life.
If you have some free time over the holidays, consider spending it with ‘The Living Qabalah.’ Explore the true game of life, why you are here and where you are in your journey. It helps us understand who we are as a personality with its ego and subconscious mind, who we are as a spiritual being or soul and who we all are as part of spirit.
This is life’s journey and out of it comes the fundamental rules of how life works, how we fit in, how we interact with others and how we grow and change. It applies to every facet of life and at all levels – not only to our life as a whole but to our small daily encounters too.
Wouldn’t you appreciate a bigger picture of life? We could describe the change with a metaphor from chess. Imagine moving from being a front line pawn with its limited capacity to being the Queen who holds power, vision and control over the whole chess board. Which position would you choose?
